Unfortunately, CYJO has shut down for the time-being. We hope to be back!
Please feel free to email to inquire.
CYJO is a group of university-aged players from Ottawa, Ontario. We rehearse weekly, playing and learning about big band music from a wide variety of styles, finally performing in concert presentations.
Many students continue on into successful careers as professional musicians. Many of our members are university students, who will ultimately be responsible for jazz big band programs of their own. CYJO seeks to give these students some of the performance, rehearsal and improvisational experience they will need to be successful and effective performers and educators in the future.
Education through exposure to musical arrangements, from classics to newly commissioned works, and with the input of professional musicians is what we're after.
CYJO has hosted many guest soloists in it's relatively short existence; saxophonists Mike Scorah, Patrick Breiner, Michael Webster, Petr Cancura, Vince Rimbach, Rene Lavoie and Mike Tremblay; trumpeters Jason Logue, Frederic Paci and Lex French, trombonist Mark Ferguson, guitarist Wayne Eagles, and trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg. We have shared the stage with groups like McGill Jazz Orchestra, under the direction of Joe Sullivan, and 'La Garza' latin ensemble of the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam, under the direction of Marsha Baxter. We are pleased to perform regularly as part of Ottawa International Jazz Festival's Youth Series every June. We staged a 10th Anniversary Reunion Band at Ottawa International Jazz Festival 2019 that was unbelievably successful, featuring many former CYJOers who are now performing professionally.
Learning about and celebrating Canadian composers and musicians is also important to us, and we continue to study and perform the music of Canadians such as Rob McConnell, Christine Jensen, John MacLeod, Paul Tynan, Joe Sullivan, Rob Frayne, Mark Ferguson, Adam Daudrich, Pierre Chretien and Craig Pedersen.
Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra rehearsals are directed by trumpeter Nicholas Dyson, and have featured clinics from saxophonists Vince Rimbach, Petr Cancura, Rob Frayne, Mike Tremblay and Mike Mullin, trombonist Mark Ferguson and trumpeter Chris Lane.
Our hope is that you'll join us as at a performance as we continue to grow. Thank you for your support!
